2.) Electric assist is a vehicle that powers the engine when the car is running uphill or on sudden acceleration. Honda Insight is a good example. It is claimed that up to 15% fuel consumption can be saved as against regular car models.
3.) Series hybrid consists of an internal combustion engine powering an electric motor. Unlike in conventional cars, combustion engine of a hybrid car does not directly turn the wheels into motion. The batteries do the job. What the engine can do is either to charge the batter or to directly energize the electric motor. It is still under wraps, and first car of this type may be released sometime in the future.

The fuel efficiency of the hybrid cars depends on the amount of driving between recharges. The actual efficiency achieved depends on losses from electricity generation, inversion, battery charging/discharging, the motor controller and motor itself, the way a vehicle is used , and the opportunities to recharge by connecting to the electrical grid.
I have heard good and bad things about hybrid cars, mainly based on what is used for fueling them.
For instance, a hybrid hydrogen car kept constantly failing, while a hybrid methane car almost never failed (it just behaved like a regular car..).
But I believe that electric cars are the future, only if we can find a better battery solution than what exists today.
